How the primary school learning path is put together

In short. Primary school — groep 3 through 8. Below you can read what the set-up rests on, which choices are ours and what is not finished yet.

What decides the package: the groep, not the age

The package hangs on the groep a child is in. Groep 3 and 4 do language, reading, spelling and arithmetic — nothing more, because the learning paths of the content subjects do not start there yet. From groep 5 on, geography, history, nature & technology and citizenship are added. English and computer science (digital literacy) are on by default from groep 7 and can be switched on yourself from groep 5, for schools that teach foreign languages early.

What is not finished yet

The first two bands of the reading path lean on the voice of the device. It sounds different on every phone and on some browsers not at all; a recorded voice of our own would be better, and that is not there yet.

And the AVI step shown with a chapter is a classification, not a measurement. Schoolschrift does not administer an AVI test, so the label says what level the material is at — not what level you read at.

That is not a matter of taste but a check: for each subject it is fixed from which groep the learning path itself begins, and the build refuses a package that offers a subject before there is content for it. Before that rule, a child in groep 3 was offered five subjects with nothing in them.

Where the levels come from

Within a subject the path runs not by groep but by reference level: 1F is what everyone is expected to reach at the end of primary school, 1S is the target level above that. For reading we also use the AVI ladder, because that is the common scale there. Our own reading path starts one step below it, before AVI-Start: at the first four letters.

The learning paths hang on the core objectives. For Dutch, arithmetic/mathematics and Frisian that is the set that has been law since August 2026; for the other subjects it is the 2006 set, until the new one is introduced. On the core objectives page you can see, per subject and per year, which chapter hangs on which core objective.

Why reading has a learning path of its own

Language and reading used to be one subject. They are two things: language awareness assumes you already know the words, and technical reading is exactly what comes before that. Reading therefore starts at zero — twelve blocks, from the first four letters to a short sentence — and every exercise in the first two bands is read aloud. Without sound you cannot teach anyone to read, and without reading aloud every exercise is a reading test instead of the practice it ought to be. That learning path is not only for groep 3: someone who cannot read at forty starts at the same first lesson, and there is not a single preschool topic in it.

What is the same on every route

One chapter at a time: the next one opens once you finish the chapter test with at least 80%. Repetition runs per learning goal and stays within material you have already covered. Mistakes cost energy and it fills back up by itself — there is no button to buy lives, and the app never asks you to keep going.
